Work on Loggerhead Shrikes began in 2009 when intern Hutch Collins followed 6 radio-tagged birds on Tall Timbers and the Wade Tract. Territory size (MCP) ranged from 2.4 -15.9 hectares with a mean of 6.2 (± 4.9). The variation in territory size was attributed to differences in breeding behavior. An unpaired female ranged over 15.9 hectares while a pair that was incubating covered only 2.4 hectares. Basal area was positively correlated with territory extents and ranged from 27.2 – 86.1 ft2/acre.
Follow-up work was conducted by Michael McDonald and Aubrey Sirman on Tall Timbers where color-marked birds were monitored for approximately five months. These data have not yet been analyzed.
