Is preserving the rural, scenic, and natural heritage of the greater Red Hills region worth it? Landowners who have donated conservation easements in the region to Tall Timbers believe it is. Thanks to their generosity, more than 114,000 acres of open space and natural areas will be permanently protected. Perpetual donated conservation easements are a popular tool for conserving working farms and forest lands. They enable families to remain on the land while providing some important tax incentives so they can continue their good stewardship. Tall Timbers is working with the Land Trust Alliance to ensure that the current federal tax incentives remain in place.

Currently, Tall Timbers holds only donated easements. However, conservation-minded landowners may have additional tools available as well, including purchase easements, fee lands, and gifts of land. The convergence of motivated landowners, a variety of conservation alternatives, and an enhanced federal income tax incentive (for donated easements only) could spark even greater interest among area landowners to conserve the family lands they love.

Our Land Conservancy was founded in 1990 and is now a unit of Tall Timbers, and is one of the largest regional land trusts in the South. The organization was accredited by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission in February 2009. The accreditation seal, which is renewable after five years, is awarded to land trusts which comply with the Land Trust Standards and Practices, the ethical and technical guidelines for the responsible operation of a land trust. Although Tall Timbers is extremely proud of its accreditation, we are always seeking opportunities to better serve our easement donors. Tall Timbers is committed to working diligently and effectively with landowners to ensure that their special family lands are conserved for the enjoyment of this and future generations.
