New Campaign for Prescribed Fire in Florida

Tall Timbers and the Florida Forest Service have teamed up to deliver a new prescribed fire marketing campaign. Call it public support, social license, or normalization, we all know that keeping community support for prescribed fire is key for protecting and expanding its use.

Expanding Private Lands Prescribed Fire Use

The Tall Timbers Burn Team fills a valuable niche that directly aids in the use of fire on private lands. This is a small, well-trained unit that engages, educates and assists landowners to apply more fire on their land. In its first two years, the Team has already worked with hundreds of landowners across thousands of acres in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama.

National Prescribed Fire Training Center moves to Tall Timbers

Cooperation between Tall Timbers and the National Interagency Prescribed Fire Training Center (PFTC) just took a huge stride forward. PFTC is now located at Tall Timbers. The offices and equipment previously located on the grounds of the Tallahassee Airport have been moved to their new home on the Tall Timbers’ campus.

Pandemic Impacts on Prescribed Fire

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted lives around the world in countless ways. To help learn more about one of these many impacts, Tall Timbers is working with the NASA Earth Science Division through their Rapid Response program and the Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station, Missoula Fire Lab to measure and better understand changes in the use of prescribed fire during the pandemic.

Fire Behavior Models Critical to Prescribed Fire Planning

Tall Timbers is at the center of a revolution in fire science to advance models of fire behavior critical to prescribed fire planning. Nearly all fire modeling tools available to guide fire fighters and prescribed fire planners are built on a faulty assumption about how fire spreads. While these tools are calibrated by users when fires begin, they cannot meet the needs of fire prediction in advance. Coupled fire-atmospheric modeling tools have been available for nearly 20 years, but since many of these required high performing “super computers” to run, they were dismissed as research only.

Prescribed fire and air quality – getting the right numbers

Prescribed fire and air quality - getting the right numbers By Dr. Kevin Robertson, Fire Ecology Scientist One of the biggest threats to prescribed burning is increasingly strict air quality regulations. Fire emits "particulate matter" (PM) into the air as...

Prescribed Fire Training Center offers first June training session

The Prescribed Fire Training Center (PFTC) held its inaugural June session this year. In order to train participants in the ecological use of growing season fire, the Center developed this session in conjunction with a number of its cooperators, including Tall Timbers Research Station & Land Conservancy.
