SUMMARY:Safe Harbor Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the Jones Center at Ichauway for a Special Workshop on Safe Harbor and Red-cockaded Woodpeckers! \nThe Red-cockaded Woodpecker is one of the great assets of southern pine forests. The woodpecker excavates cavities that last for decades and provide homes for Wood Ducks and scores of other birds. The abundance of cavity-nesting birds doubles when Red-cockaded Woodpeckers are present. Just like quail\, frequent fire is also essential for maintaining good woodpecker habitat. Regulations on the use of prescribed are likely to increase as fewer people make a living off the land. Burning for good quail habitat and a rare species could help reinforce the importance of fire for a much larger audience. \nPrivate landowners also have some exciting new tools available that remove the obligations sometimes involved when an imperiled woodpecker is in the mix. Landowners can now have great pinewoods\, great quail numbers\, and woodpeckers\, too\, without jeopardizing future land-management opportunities. \nThe workshop will be hosted by the Jones Center at Ichauway\, Tall Timbers\, and Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Staff will provide background on woodpecker habitat needs and management and the benefits of the Safe Harbor Program. Field tours will visit prime woodpecker habitat and also demonstrate first-hand some of the tools used to manage woodpecker populations. Some of the cost-share programs available that emphasize properties that support the woodpecker will also be reviewed. \nKindly RSVP to\nTall Timbers Development Office\nAmy Allen\n(850) 893-4153 ext. 249 \nWe hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Something to Crow About: The Mental Bandwidth of Crows and their Relatives
DESCRIPTION:Join Jim Cox\, Stoddard Bird Lab Director at Tall Timbers\, for a fascinating program on how the intelligence in crows sets them apart from other birds. With more than 120 species of crows across the world\, southwest Georgia is home to only two\, the American Crow and the Fish Crow. Jim will share recent research on the intriguing intelligence and behavior of these common animals that have uncommonly complex behaviors. He will also talk about how humans and crows have engaged with one another\, highlighting the Native American perspectives\, Colonial and Industrial Ages\, and what we know about them today. \nThe talk will be held at the Pebble Hill Plantation Learning Center. Following the discussion\, Jim will lead a walk on the grounds of Pebble Hill in search of groups of crows demonstrating their unique behaviors as well as pointing behaviors of other native birds. Participants should bring binoculars\, water\, and wear comfortable shoes for the walk. Participants are invited to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the grounds of Pebble Hill after the event.

SUMMARY:BirdQuest 2019
DESCRIPTION:BirdQuest 2019 takes place on October 3 on the beautiful Four Oaks Plantation in Brooks County\, Georgia. This is your opportunity to support our most important annual fundraising event effort. Many thanks to the staff at Four Oaks for providing us with this opportunity to document the bird diversity of this stellar property. Four Oaks features wonderful longleaf pine forests with native groundcover\, bays and other forested wetlands\, and a mix of old farmlands and oldfield forests that are sure to harbor a great diversity of birds. \nStaff with the Stoddard Bird Lab will rise before dawn and count all the species they can see on Four Oaks Plantation in a single day. By day’s end\, we hope to have 100 species tallied. \nPlease make your pledge now for the species seen on October 3. BirdQuest 2019 supports a graduate stipend for Heather Levy ($15\,500) and will enable her to wrap up her graduate study of cavity-nesting birds in the Red Hills region in May 2020. To make a pledge\, visit our on-line pledge form at this link.

SUMMARY:Green Again Madagascar
DESCRIPTION:Join Tall Timbers and Birdsong Nature Center for a Lunch & Learn presentation on October 1st from Noon to 1:00 with Matt Hill from Green Again Madagascar in the Komarek Education Center at Tall Timbers (13093 Henry Beadel Rd\, Tallahassee\, FL). As fire becomes more common in rainforests due to climate change\, understanding tolerance of rainforest tree species to fire becomes increasingly important. Madagascar’s northeast coast is particularly vulnerable to fire given the spread of the fern\, Dicranopteris linearis\, which is extremely flammable and promotes its own dominance in this region. The objective of the study was to investigate which Malagasy tree species were better able to survive a wildfire disturbance and what site conditions or species characteristics were associated with survival. \nJoin Matt on his visit back to the states for a look at this fascinating project on resilience with implications for restoration practitioners who work amidst highly flammable fuels.

SUMMARY:Small Landowner Stewardship Group with Jim Stevenson
DESCRIPTION:If you own a tract of natural land and have questions about land management\, you are invited to attend a meeting with other landowners. We are small landowners with the goal of helping to make connections among small landowners struggling with the same land management issues. \nThis is an informal group providing this service to those who wish to restore and manage their land to a healthy natural condition. Tracts of 25 to 1\,000 acres are appropriate. We will have some land management experts present to talk with us about such topics as prescribed fire\, control of invasive plants\, and erosion reduction. However\, we also want to hear about the issues and potential solutions you have grappled with on your property. \nOur first meeting will be Saturday\, March 30\, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Tall Timbers (13093 Henry Beadel Drive\, Tallahassee). There is no fee. Bring a lawn chair\, your lunch\, beverage and your questions. \nMark your calendar and spread the word to your friends and neighbors who may be interested. Smaller landowners can have an even larger impact when they work together to create corridors or clusters of habitat. \nTo help in our planning efforts\, please consider sending us your phone number\, e-mail and the acreage and county your land is located within. This is not necessary to participate. Agenda to be provided. \nContact: Jim A. Stevenson – Naturalist & small landowner | phone: 562-5716 | email: Florida_springs@comcast.net
