Research

Fire is the common theme that encompasses every part of our research from carbon sequestration to bobwhite quail population dynamics.
Since 1958 we have been using prescribed fire science to solve land management problems. Our unique perspective is rooted in this long-term practice of working cooperatively with partners to conduct research and apply results on the land.

Services & Support Informed by Our Research

Private Lands Prescribed Fire Services

Our Burn Team is a unique and direct effort to deliver science-based support to private landowners interested in bringing frequent fire back to their land. We can provide you with hands-on help as you learn to burn your land, or technical guidance and help identifying a qualified burn vendor to meet your needs.

Prescribed Fire Training

Part of the solution for humans to coexist with fire once again is to build a diverse and nimble fire workforce that not only fights fire, but lights fire as well. Tall Timbers is deeply engaged in collaborative wildland fire training to address this urgent need on public and private lands.

Prescribed Fire Policy & Advocacy

We also help provide expert support for policymakers while advocating for changes that will help increase the pace and scale of prescribed fire use. Our unique perspective is rooted in a long-term practice of working cooperatively to conduct research and apply it to over a one million acres through a network of land managers in the Southeast.

Geospatial Center

A regional hub at Tall Timbers providing geospatial solutions for natural resource professionals. The Geospatial Center delivers services both internally to our research and conservation programs, and externally through contracts with partner organizations. Project highlights and examples are provided.

Wade Tract Old Growth Longleaf Research

The history of fire use and research conducted on the Wade Tract, coupled with the extreme rarity of this old-growth forest type, make it a critically important site for ecological research. While the site is not open to the public, our work at the Wade Tract serves larger efforts to protect and restore longleaf by providing insights as a minimally altered reference site.
