About the Houston Quail Coalition The Houston Quail Coalition’s mission is to sustain and restore huntable wild quail populations, to encourage and educate interested youth, and to celebrate our quail hunting heritage in this region. The Houston Quail Coalition is a chapter of the larger parent organization, Quail Coalition. Position Summary The Houston Quail Coalition is seeking a highly motivated candidate to serve as the program’s biologist promoting, coordinating, and implementing quail conservation activities in the legacy landscape of south Texas. The core properties in this region are located within a 50 mile radius of Hebbronville, TX. Principal Duties/Expectations: The biologist will be responsible for: · Conducting site visits and technical guidance to stakeholders within the HQC working region, including providing reports where necessary. The biologist is expected to have at least 30 contact visits per year. · Coordinating field days, workshops, and events focused on quail management and research in the region. · Collaboration with researchers and conservation partners. The biologist will be responsible for identifying pressing research and conservation interests in the region, synthesizing regional management trends and quail populations. While research is not a core duty of the project, the biologist may be required to participate or facilitate some research activities (e.g., call count training, ARU deployment, quail trapping, etc.). · Engaging the local community in quail conservation practices and-or connecting landowners/managers with appropriate resources (e.g., prescribed fire, mechanical, or chemical vendors). While land management is not core responsibility of this position, it is expected that the biologist will engage with land managers seeking guidance on various practices such as prescribed fire, grazing, or brush management (e.g., burn planning, stocking plans, etc.). · Synthesizing successful management and hunting practices for properties in the region. Minimum Qualifications · Applicant must be personable and have exemplary communication skills · The successful candidate should be supportive of the consumptive use of wildlife via both hunting and cultural management practices such as meso-mammal removal. · A minimum of two years of experience working with private landowners is preferred · Understanding and experience with management practices promoting habitat for northern bobwhite such as prescribed fire, grazing, brush control, and harvest management. · Specific knowledge of south Texas wildlife is desirable. · Strong writing and analytical ability. · Candidate should be proficient in basic data curation/storage practices and programs (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint). · Proficiency using ArcMap. · Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, forestry, or a related field.
