Media roundup: Tall Timbers tapped for fire, forestry expertise

Jun 15, 2026

Tall Timbers scientists place emphasis on being available for media interviews that help our messages reach our target audiences.

One message we’ve been intimately involved with is the severe drought across the Southeast that has recently lessened but still persists after an early start to wildfire season in the first quarter of 2025.

Research Director Morgan Varner has been tapped to discuss the issue in a variety of local and national media outlets – the New York Times, WFSU, CNN, Grist – a nod to Tall Timbers longstanding focus on the effects of fire on the ecosystem.

As wildfires in Florida and Georgia burned thousands of acres, Varner shed light on how the prevalence of prescribed fire on private and public lands in both states is not only helping reduce the potential for catastrophic wildfires but is also a boon to rare and endangered species habitat.

Nationally, his expertise helped shed perspective on what a more active wildfire season could mean for timber production in the Southeast and how it links to climate change and seasonal conditions like drought and El Niño. He also delved into the economic impact of controlled burns nationwide.

CNN: Wildfire season is off to a historic start and it could get worse

NYT: Wildfires Strike Florida, Georgia and America’s ‘Wood Basket’

WFSU: Florida is extremely dry, and active wildfire conditions are ongoing

Grist: How controlled burns can help save taxpayers billions
